The project objective is the creation of housing and support facilities for 5000 occupants who are employed in a local production district. These workers are among the “floating” workforce that migrate from rural areas and are generally considered crucial to China’s Economic Trade Zones situated in coastal urban centers. Notwithstanding their positive contribution to the success of China’s globalized production economy, this workforce suffers from the precariousness of an unstable socio-economic system; the resultant anomie and disaffiliation tends to exacerbate the problems of social and economic integration.
The idea is to design a general scheme that provides housing and support facilities for migrant workers that foster a sense of community and stability. Although workers may be employed on average 14 hours a day, the residential complex should include public amenities and services to meet the need for socializing and recreation. Health and Educational needs should be provided for as well.
The notion is that an integrated community providing well-designed residential accommodations, essential services, as well as free-time activities & public spaces for socializing, will ultimately help in establishing a sense of belonging and permanence.
