As many others industrial ports in the Mediterranean area Ravenna witnesses, since two decades, to huge abandonment and re-conversion processes along the sides of Canale Candiano – a 10 km long water channel that connects the city centre with the Adriatic sea – on which the former productive plants settled down in the past.
The exercise will focus on the design of a portion of land on the southern side of the canal in which will coexist a park, a built zone (mixed use office buildings) and a portion of the waterfront itself. The goals can be resumed in three main points: a coherent relation between the new intervention and the surrounding context, with the new planned park, with the public space system and the nearby buildings; a functional volumetric organization of the building complex, which should articulate the maximum allowed building surface in different buildings and dispose clear conditions and organization principles able to guide future expansions of the complex; a conscious approach to a low-absorbing architecture and a sustainable building process, providing of passive protection systems on south facades, etc.
