The Master in Urban Management and Architectural Design in Domus Academy has
started, during the academic year 2007/2008, the research program "Milan. New opportunities for the public space".
In this context, students have been invited to reflect on new forms and strategies for the re- production of the public side of the city around conditions which are not necessarily physical – for instance the energetic issues, the natural elements and immaterial flows like culture or fashion.
Three workshops have been activated within this research field: Water City, which proposed new collective infrastructures based on the aquatic element; Green Ring City, that re-designed the open spaces in correspondence of the old Spanish walls (presented with a public conference at Triennale di Milano, on April the 3rd, 2008);
and Gate City, that re-organized the external areas close to four Milanese railway stations.
Together with this main topic, the students had the opportunity to work on a town planning exercise in the Chinese context – the design of a village for 5000 workers near Shanghai, coordinated by Aldo Cibic – and on an architectural design experience in the Mediterranean Area – the development of the headquarters for one of the main Italian building companies.
