The workshop deals with the renovation of four urban sites next to four railway stations – Porta Genova, Lambrate, Porta Garigaldi and Rogoredo – in which a relevant part of Milan railway and local transport network intersect, and that actually demonstrate the lack of quality that identifies the public space of the city.
The urgent task is – also in the perspective of the 2015 world exhibition – to re-structure and to give new meaning to places that have changed or are about to change their urban role, and still don’t have an adequate design in terms of open spaces.
The exercise will focus on the “urban side” of each station trying to re-define the complex system of functions that live there, according three main goals: a new and qualified aspect that works in parallel with the restoring policy promoted by the municipality, aiming to bring scattered quality through punctual interventions; a better solved intersection between the arrival of the train cars, the flows of pedestrians, the urban traffic and the network of public transport; a new layout for minor activities, the universe of temporary/informal commercial huts that proliferate around these dense transit sites.
